From idea to finished product

The process

Our department for method and development uses CAD / CAM, which makes the first phase of development very efficient and shortens the time to production.

You get an impression of the product at an early stage through simulations and tests you can run digitally.

3D drawings

Frekhaug Stål has its own model workshop, but also buys models from partners. The models are manufactured in plastic, steel, wood, cast iron and bronze.

We want to receive drawings on data file. The advantage of DAK / DAP manufactured models is that they are very accurate. We also make models of traditional drawings received in paper format.

We calculate shrinkage. Running and feeding systems are dimensioned and mounted by our own professional staff.

Model Production

Moulding

Production starts at the mold department. The department has a varied machinery park for the production of different types of shapes and cores. The molds are made either on shell forming machines or on the sand molding line. Kernels are made both as shell kernels and in the cold box variant. To provide the best possible surface, some cores are zircon based coated.

The advantage of shell shapes is good tolerances and fine surface. The sand molding line is used for larger castings and small series.

Casting

Our furnaces have a capacity for melting of approx. 1 ton per hour. We have two furnaces ,each with the capacity of 1000 kg which are used for large goods and large series. Furthermore, we have an oven with a capacity of 300 kg, which is used for smaller series and special alloys. Professional personnel analyze each melt in the laboratory before and after casting, ensuring that it is cast within the requirements specifications.

We cast sample bars for each melt and certificates are issued as per customer’s requirements.

Fetling shop

In order to meet the growing demand, much has been invested in our fetling shop in recent years. Both locales and machinery have been upgraded and expanded!

Here the cut / grind fill and feeders are cut / sanded and the product is adapted for further machining and assembly. At this time, we can also provide penetrant control if desired.

After this, the product is cleaned either in sandblasting machines loaded with stainless steel balls or in a vibrator machine. This happens after the heat treatment. If stained surface is desired, this can be arranged.

Heat treatment

The fetling shop has two new heat treatment ovens with temperatures up to 1300 degrees Celsius. All products are heat treated according to alloy and desired properties (mechanical).

The bed time in the ovens varies according to the thickness of the product. After some time in the oven, the products are quenched in cold water baths or naturally cooled in air.

Quality control

Before the products are shipped to the customer, they go through quality control and approval against the customer’s requirements. It can be penetrant control or tensile tests that we carry out ourselves. We can also offer other forms of NDT, such as X-ray, in collaboration with external approved suppliers.

If certificates are desired, sample sticks are sent to an external laboratory that performs mechanical tests.

Machining

Through our good partners, Frekhaug Stål can offer finished machined products. Our partners have provided first-class services to Frekhaug Stål for many years and have modern machinery and skilled professionals. Together with these we are a total supplier and can deliver ready-made products ready for use.
